Temporal constraints on visual perception: A psychophysical investigation of the relation between attention capture and the attentional blink
نویسنده
چکیده
When two targets (T1 & T2) are presented in rapidsuccession, observers often fail to report T2 if they attendto T1. The bottleneck theory proposes that this attentionalblink (AB) is due to T1 occupying a slow processing stagewhen T2 is presented. Accordingly, if increasing T1difficulty increases T1 processing time, this should cause agreater AB. The attention capture hypothesis suggests thatT1 captures attention, which cannot be reallocated to T2 intime. Accordingly, if increasing T1 difficulty decreases T1saliency, this should cause a smaller AB. In twoexperiments we find support for an attention capturehypothesis. In Experiment 1 we find that AB magnitudeincreases with T1 contrast – but only when T1 is unmasked. In Experiment 2 we add Gaussian noise to targets and varyT1 contrast but keep T1 ‘s SNR constant. Again we findthat AB magnitude increases with T1 contrast.

Made you blink! Contingent attentional capture produces a spatial blink.
Previous studies have shown that the capture of attention by an irrelevant stimulus can be eliminated by fore knowledge of the spatial location of the relevant target stimulus. To explore whether spatial certainty is sufficient to eliminate capture, four experiments are reported in which the spatial location of the target is certain but the temporal position is uncertain. Subjects viewed a cent...
متن کاملAttentional dynamics and visual perception: mechanisms of spatial disorientation in Alzheimer's disease.
Visuospatial disorientation forces Alzheimer's disease patients to abandon independent activities. We found previously that limitations of ambulatory and vehicular navigation are linked to impaired visual motion processing in Alzheimer's disease. We now hypothesize that these perceptual impairments reflect temporal constraints on visual attention. We evaluated attentional, perceptual and neurop...
متن کاملRightward shift in temporal order judgements in the wake of the attentional blink
The temporal order of two events, each presented in a different visual hemifield, is judged correctly by typical observers even when their onsets differ only slightly. The present study examined the influence of an endogenous process on TOJ, and shows that the perception of temporal order is also affected when available attentional resources are reduced via an attentional blink (AB) paradigm. P...
متن کاملThe role of the magnocellular and parvocellular pathways in the attentional blink.
The attentional blink refers to the transient impairment in perceiving the 2nd of two targets presented in close temporal proximity in a rapid serial visual presentation (RSVP) stream. The purpose of this study was to examine the effect on human attentional-blink performance of disrupting the function of the magnocellular pathway--a major visual-processing pathway specialized in temporal segreg...
متن کاملThe beneficial effect of concurrent task-irrelevant mental activity on temporal attention.
It is believed that the human cognitive system is fundamentally limited in deploying attention over time. This limitation is reflected in the attentional blink, the impaired ability to identify the second of two visual targets presented in close succession. We report the paradoxical finding that the attentional blink is significantly ameliorated when observers are concurrently engaged in distra...
